Tour outline

Thursday: Train from Tring to Glasgow via Euston, one night in Glasgow, then a train to Oban in time for the afternoon ferry to Castlebay, Barra. Then the tour proper begins on Saturday morning, cycling from Barra up through the Outer Hebridian Islands with time to meander and explore. By Wednesday we should reach Stornoway for the ferry to Ullapool on mainland Scotland, then up further North and around the top to Orkney by the second Monday. There we have four days to explore before catching the overnight ferry to Aberdeen, followed by First Class train travel home. Two and a half weeks, done!

Castlebay to Daliburgh

Rain lashed the windows through the night and it was still blowing in drifts across the bay in the morning. Cold - down to 7 celsius. Quick visit to co-op made longer by number of locals doing weekly shops. Cycled up western route to the airport and continued beyond until the road ran out.

Weather warming up a little - double figures!

Back to the airport cafe for some lunch and then a walk on the beach. Jackie even had a paddle (extreme stuff). Back to the airport to witness a plane arriving and landing on the beach. Tea and cakes in the cafe then to the ferry for Eriskay. Saw some sea lions from the ferry.

Causeway from Eriskay to Uist and then the co-op at Daliburgh to get dinner and breakfast before finding the bunk-house which is a strange combination of hostel and hotel.
