Tour outline

Thursday: Train from Tring to Glasgow via Euston, one night in Glasgow, then a train to Oban in time for the afternoon ferry to Castlebay, Barra. Then the tour proper begins on Saturday morning, cycling from Barra up through the Outer Hebridian Islands with time to meander and explore. By Wednesday we should reach Stornoway for the ferry to Ullapool on mainland Scotland, then up further North and around the top to Orkney by the second Monday. There we have four days to explore before catching the overnight ferry to Aberdeen, followed by First Class train travel home. Two and a half weeks, done!

Day 2 - Daliburgh to Knockintorran (North Uist)

1 pint of beer, two madonnas and 3 cups of tea. Great route by Sally following a lot of side roads along the machair. Brief visit to Our Lady of the Isles statue (I cycled on my own to the top) then a turn off to the Orasay Inn for lunch. Saw the madonna in the glass case on the way - much prefer this one to the first. The pub is now a private guest house but still did a lovely lunch in the sun outside. Weather closed in as we finished and cycled to the co-op on Bembecula in the rain. Sally amazed at the gluten free section. Causeway over to North Uist where we stopped for tea from the thermos flasks and cakes from the co-op. Arrived at B&B about 5:30. Beautiful meal of local smoked salmon fillets, new potatoes and fresh veg followed by fruit salad. Simple but lovely. Spectacular after dinner walk in perfect light and hardly any wind. Very sun-burnt faces!

Also - experiments with dynamo hub are going well. The dynamo hub generates power which recharges a 9000mah battery which I then use to recharge the phone, garmin and rear light. So far I have been able to return the battery to full charge at the end of every day. If all goes well then I can rely on this when we go camping in Sardinia and Corsica.
