Sun burn or is it wind burn - either way my face is bright as a tomato. No rush this morning since our ferry wasn't until 1:30 and only 20 miles away. Jeremy cooked up a great breakfast and waved us on our way just before 10. The single track road followed the coast around the west of North Uist with views over the sea to the Monarch Isles. A Scottie dog chased us down the road and would have snapped at our ankles if it had longer legs. We might also have been able to see St Kilda but we weren't sure what we were looking for. The tide was out and the views over the sands were rather good. Stopped at the co-op is Solas for snacks and to watch a farmer herding sheep before ambling on toward Berneray and the ferry. A couple of miles before the ferry there is a stone age site in a loch with a causeway running to one island and then another. I don't know if it's been restored but it looks amazing. Grabbed sandwiches to eat on the ferry at the Lobster Pot Cafe (too many "do not" signs) and then caught the ferry to Leverburgh on Harris. Visited the community run coop in Leverburgh but the upstairs cafe that Hannah visited last September is now closed. Dithered over how much food to buy for tomorrow (not many shops on the route tomorrow) and in the end settled for oat cakes, cheese and an apple. The road round the east of Harris is very hilly in comparison to North Uist and the landscape is like the moon. The church at Rodel is particularly beautiful (16th century) with access to the tower. Only 3 more hilly miles took us to Allan and Panch's guesthouse in Finsbay. Another great meal (scallops/monk fish/baked apple) and then a walk to try an spot an otter.
