I've really taken a lot of photos today. The scenery is so varied and amazing. Each area of the Outer Hebrides has its own character. The eastern side of Harris is like a moonscape. Bare rocks with little earth. How people ever scratched a living from it I don't know but it's very beautiful. It's about 12 miles from Allan and Panch's lovely B&B at the Old School House to Tarbert, a small port from which you can catch a ferry to Uig on Skye. Called in at the shop for supplies and then excellent coffee in the First Fruits cafe, where we met most of the cyclists we had caught the ferry with from Oban last week. There's not a lot between Tarbert and Callanish so lunch was a picnic at the side of the road and afternoon tea was from the flask by the side of a loch. We arrived in Callanish around 4:30 and visited the smaller of the stone circles before heading to the visitor centre where we thought we would just do a quick visit to the famous stones before finding the B&B. It turned out that our host Gregor worked in the cafe and was able to tell us exactly where to find the guest house (with the door left open of course because this is the Outer Hebrides). We also learnt that the nearest pub to eat at was 5 miles away but we could dine at the B&B if we wished on take away food from the cafe at a very reasonable price. So that's what we did. After supper we walked to the stones and joined the other photographers waiting for the sunset. Weather - dry all day, very hot at times (especially on the big hills) and always a head wind against us. Face is red and one part of one leg is sun burnt!
