Tour outline

Thursday: Train from Tring to Glasgow via Euston, one night in Glasgow, then a train to Oban in time for the afternoon ferry to Castlebay, Barra. Then the tour proper begins on Saturday morning, cycling from Barra up through the Outer Hebridian Islands with time to meander and explore. By Wednesday we should reach Stornoway for the ferry to Ullapool on mainland Scotland, then up further North and around the top to Orkney by the second Monday. There we have four days to explore before catching the overnight ferry to Aberdeen, followed by First Class train travel home. Two and a half weeks, done!

Don't have a photo to add for this one because my phone battery died on the ferry ride from Oban to Barra. We've had a long day of travelling with only a short ride at the end of the day to stretch the legs a little.

We were up and down for breakfast at the Premier Inn at 7am. Sally was allowed to stray from the continental options because there was almost no gluten free stuff she could eat. They made me a lovely big bowl of Porridge so no complaints from me.

Dry ride to Queen Street Station in Glasgow to catch the 8:21 to Oban. Plenty of bikes on the train and bike reservations were carefully checked by the guard. 3 hours later we arrived in Oban with a couple of hours until the ferry departed.

The seafood stall near the station was doing a great trade in fresh crab, salmon, prawns and mussels. Bought salmon sandwiches for later on the ferry and shared some mussels with Sally at the seafood bar. Highly recommended.

Sally tried the deli in Oban for something gluten free but had to settle for a pot of salmon on some of her own gluten free oat cakes. We just had time to ride up to Kerrera, which means a lot to me because it was one of Grandad's favourite places.

The ferry to Barra takes 5 hours, so there was plenty of time for admiring the Sound of Mull, drinking tea, doing crosswords and sleeping.

Arrived in Barra around 6:30. Loads of cyclists getting off boat. Guest house just a minutes ride away. John and Jill very welcoming but off out themselves to a local restaurant. Tell us there is no need to lock any doors or bicycles since there is no crime here.

We went out for a short bike ride to Vetersay (the island just to south and connected by a causeway). Met a young lad playing football just over the causeway and asked him what team he supported. "Celtic" he said and then told us we should turn right and visit the village. This turned out to be a lovely ride though the village itself was just a small group of houses at the end of the road. Saw some of the cyclists from the ferry wild camping.

Back to Castlebay and to the Castlebay Hotel for dinner. Had to send back the chips since they were uncooked but otherwise a good meal. Waitresses very nervous (not helped by us rejecting the first chips).

Jon and Jill's B&B very comfy. That's all for today!
